The lake, the light, the Himalaya.
Dawn on Sarangkot, a paraglider off the ridge, boats on Phewa by afternoon, the Annapurna trailheads a jeep ride away. What each tour is really like, what it costs, and where to book.
Six you won’t second-guess.
First trip or fifth, these anchor a Pokhara week: the steepest zip-line in the country, a sunrise that turns the whole range gold, the trek people plan the rest of the trip around.

Straight into the amphitheatre.
Days up the Modi Khola gorge, through rhododendron forest and stone-step villages, until the trail opens into a ring of white peaks with Annapurna I dead ahead. No summit, no rope. Just the closest a walker gets to an eight-thousander, and a teahouse waiting at the top.
Which trek is yours?
Everyone leaves Pokhara for the mountains; which trail depends on how many days you have and how high you want to sleep. Three honest ways up, each already walked, reviewed and priced.
The full sanctuary
Annapurna Base Camp
5 days · from $96 · 72 reviews
A week or more up the Modi Khola to the 4,130 m amphitheatre, ringed by peaks on every side. The big one: teahouse nights, a hard-earned dawn at the glacier, the mountain wall close enough to feel. For walkers with the days and steady legs.

The short classic
Ghorepani & Poon Hill
from $230 · 176 reviews
Three or four days to the most famous dawn in Nepal: Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South catching fire from a 3,210 m ridge, rhododendron forest and Ghandruk village on the way down. The trek that fits a first visit and still delivers the view.

The quiet ridge
Mardi Himal
4 days · from $139 · 59 reviews
The route the crowds still miss: a high forest ridge under the Fishtail, four or five days on quieter trails, a last push to a viewpoint below Machapuchare. For a second trek, or a first one away from the queues.

The whole valley, from a wing.
Run off the Sarangkot ridge with a pilot at your back and the thermals do the rest: Phewa Lake turning below, the town shrinking, the Annapurnas filling the skyline. Twenty to forty minutes of the best seat in Nepal. Zip-lines and a bungee on the same hillside if you would rather drop than glide.
Phewa Lake runs the day.
A blue rowboat out to the island shrine, the pagoda trail up the far bank, a quiet paddle before the wind picks up at noon. The lake is where a Pokhara day starts and where it ends.
Dal bhat, made by hand.
Momos pleated properly, a lentil dal built from scratch, spices you will try to smuggle home. A Pokhara kitchen for an afternoon, and then you get to eat the homework.

Prayer wheels by the lake.
Tashi Palkhel and Tashiling have kept a Tibetan Pokhara alive since 1959: a working monastery, carpet looms clacking, elders turning prayer wheels in the sun. Half a day at walking pace, and a side of the town most itineraries skip straight past.
Pick your corner of Pokhara.
The town works in a few clear pockets, each an easy day. Lakeside for the boats and the sunset. Sarangkot for the dawn. The far bank for the pagoda climb. The old bazaar when the light goes flat.
Know what you’re after?
Twelve ways to spend a Pokhara day. Pick the one that sounds like you, and every option behind it is already reviewed and priced.
Beyond the lake.
The valley opens onto bigger country. Chitwan’s jungle a half-day south, the desert canyons of Mustang and the temple at Muktinath to the north, forest hikes and a whitewater run in between.
Three days by the lake.
You can’t reach Base Camp in a long weekend, but you can spend three near-perfect days in Pokhara. This is the order we’d hand a friend landing at the lake tomorrow.
Day 1
Settle in on the water
A rowboat to the Tal Barahi shrine, the climb to the World Peace Pagoda for sunset, dinner on Lakeside. Slow, and exactly the right speed after the flight in.

Day 2
Up before the sun
A dark start for Sarangkot, the Annapurnas going pink one peak at a time, then glide back over the lake by paraglider or roll down for a late breakfast.
Plan day two →
Day 3
Into the foothills
A day hike to Australian Camp or Dhampus for the ridge view, or the first stage of Poon Hill if the mountains have you hooked. Trail lunch, terraced fields, home by dusk.
